The Department of Biotechnology at Shobhit Institute of Engineering & Technology (Deemed-to-be-University) was founded in 2007 with a vision to be recognized as a Department of national repute with a strong interdisciplinary research and teaching base in biological sciences and engineering. The department provides various courses of undergraduate and postgraduate levels in area of Biotechnology, Microbiology and Food technology with motto to nurture the future generation to improve the quality of human life and the health of planet. The subject of Biotechnology is the intersection of two broad subjects- Biology and Technology. In simple parlance, Biotechnology is a field of applied biology that makes use of living organisms or biological systems to make technological advances and use them in various fields.

Course abstract:

Since last two decades, researchers worldwide have drawn their attention to biomass based fuels to give momentum to energy sector of nation. Biomass based fuels are not only renewable in nature but also CO2 neutral. This course will provide an insight to the basic of biomass, various conversion technologies and products that can be obtained upon successful conversion. In last two modules basic concepts of fermentation technology, biorefinery, types of biorefinery & its feed stocks will be covered for the better understanding of biofuels based industries.

Objective of the Course

TTo provide the basic understanding of Biofuels.
To develop the skills of Biotechnology & Chemical engineering tools applied to the analysis of energy conversion processes involving biomass and organic waste.

Courses Outcome:

At the end of the course the learners will be able to:

Learn the overview of world energy situation, and refinery and biorefinery concept;
Understand and apply energy balances, and thermodynamics in biomass conversion;
Understand unit processes/operations involved in biofuel/bioenergy production;
Develop experimental plan and conduct lab works pertinent to biofuel production;
Learn techno-economic analysis of various biofuel conversion technologies and their environmental attributes;
Understand the role of biological engineers in facing societal challenges.

Mr. Rupesh Kumar has a teaching, research & industrial experience of more than 12 years. He is currently working as an Assistant Professor in Department of Biotechnology, Shobhit Institute of Engineering & Technology (Deemed- to- be- University), Meerut. He completed his M.Tech. (Energy Studies), from University of Pune in 2010. He has working experience installation of various solar thermal energy projects in association with RTC, Pune. He is pursuing his doctoral research in area on algal biofuels from Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHUATS), formerly known as Allahabad Agriculture University. He has expertise in area of energy and environmental engineering, biochemical engineering and having more than 10 research publications in various scientific journals of national & International repute.
