A journalist by commitment and hands-on professional training, Prof. Shrikant Asthana has worked for various English and Hindi newspapers publishing from North India. Having been associated with students’ movements in earlier part of 80s, Prof. Asthana graduated from Kashi Vidyapith (now Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith), Varanasi, in 1985. He did Post-graduation in Commerce from the same university. Prof. Asthana’s deep-rooted concern for the people and commitment to left-oriented thoughts on socio-economic issues got him involved with writing in Hindi as well as English. This brought him in touch with the media. He started writing for various newspapers published from Varanasi and Allahabad. Even before completing his post-graduation he had joined The Pioneer at Varanasi in 1987. During his tenure with leading Hindi daily Amar Ujala, he pioneered the process for Resource Optimization in multi-edition newspapers. Thus, Amar Ujala became the first Indian newspaper to have introduced the concepts of Coordination Desks and Central Coordination desks in newsrooms at different publishing centres and the Central office. Under visionary leadership of Shri Atul Maheshwari and guidance of Sri Rameshwar Pandey, Prof. Asthana introduced a number of systemic changes to improve functioning and quality in the newsroom. He was also instrumental in introducing a number managerial techniques for monitoring and regulation of content in Hindi newspapers. Later on Prof. Asthana joined Dainik Jagran and revamped the working systems at its Meerut unit. Here, he did yeoman’s work in implementing quality concepts by formulating standardization of editorial processes. He also brought into place a regular system of recruitment and training of editorial workers. In 2005 he was assigned responsibilities for research, development and coordinate the editorial working in West UP units (Meerut, Dehradun, Aligarh and Agra) of Dainik Jagran, the largest circulated newspaper in the world. Prof. Asthana believes and has been working hard to make the industry realize that the development of journalism as an honourable profession requires continuous training and education of the journalists. His participation in Shobhit University initiative to set up the Centre for Media Research is in perfect furtherance of his vision of better journalism for a better socio-economic-political system. .
